Bears are thought to have the best sense of smell of any animal on earth. In a brief comparison, dog’s sense of smell is 100 times better than humans, and a blood hound’s is 300 times better, but a bear’s sense of smell is seven times better than a blood hound’s, 2 100 times better than a human.
How far can a bear smell?
Bears sense of smell evolved in order to help them find food, mates, keep track of their cubs and avoid danger. A bear’s sense of smell is so acute that they can detect animal carcass upwind from a distance of 20 miles away.
A bear’s brain is a third of the size of ours, yet the part devoted to smell is 5 times larger , bears have highly developed noses containing tiny muscles allowing them easy manipulate. The surface area inside their 9 inch noses has hundreds of times more surface area and receptors than a human’s.
To avoid a human bear encounter, next time you make camp in bear territory, make sure you store your food in a bear-resistant bag at least 100 yards away from your shelter.
